Pulmonic ingressive speech: a neglected universal?

نویسنده

چکیده

This paper summarizes major review work on pulmonic ingressive speech (Eklund, under revision), e.g., words like ja (yes) and nej (no) that are commonly produced on inhalation airstream in Swedish. Contrary to what is generally believed, ingressive speech is not limited to Scandinavia or present-day Nordic languages. Instead, it is shown that ingressive speech is found on all continents, in languages that are genetically unrelated. Moreover, whenever ingressive speech occurs it serves more or less the same paralinguistic functions, e.g., being predominantly a feedback marker in dialog. Since pulmonic ingressive phonation is also common in the calls of monkeys and apes, thus exhibiting a biological basis, it is argued that ingressive speech might constitute a neglected universal phenomenon, rather than being highly marked, which is how it is commonly described in the literature.

Sounds of the Human Vocal Tract

Previous research suggests that beatboxers only use sounds that exist in the world’s languages. This paper provides evidence to the contrary, showing that beatboxers use non-linguistic articulations and airstream mechanisms to produce many sound effects that have not been attested in any language. An analysis of real-time magnetic resonance videos of beatboxing reveals that beatboxers produce n...

The production of plosive consonants with an ingressive airstream is an often-encountered speech characteristic of deaf individuals. The present research examined the production of ingressive plosives employing an analysis-by-synthesis strategy. Production of ingressive plosive patterns appears related to specific alterations in synthesizer control parameters: supralaryngeal vocal-tract volume,...

Do airstream mechanisms influence tongue movement paths?

Velar consonants often show an elliptical pattern of tongue movement in symmetrical vowel contexts, but the forces responsible for this remain unclear. We here consider the role of overpressure (increased intraoral air pressure) behind the constriction by examining how movement patterns are modified when speakers change from an egressive to ingressive airstream. Tongue movement and respiratory ...
